“Waltz For Debby”, the fourth and final album by Bill Evans (piano), Scott LaFaro (bass) and Paul Motian (drums), was originally released in 1962 as a companion to the 1961 release “Sunday At The Village Vanguard”
The album showcases Evans’ unique approach to jazz piano, characterised by a delicate touch, introspective improvisations and a profound musicality
‘Waltz For Debby’ is widely regarded as one of the finest in the Evans canon, and the emotional interplay between the musicians—which at times seems almost deconstructed—continues to serve as a model for many piano trios
C. Michael Bailey of All About Jazz wrote: “Together with bass prodigy Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, Evans perfected his democratic vision of trio collaboration, in which all members played with perfect empathy and telepathy..."
It is these recordings, currently available as ‘Sunday At The Village Vanguard’ and ‘Waltz For Debby’, that constitute the finest live jazz recording in the current series
However, the beauty of “Waltz For Debby” lies not only in the musical skill, but also in the intimate atmosphere created by the Bill Evans Trio
The live recording vividly captures the incomparable ambience of the legendary jazz club in the heart of New York City, with the presence of the audience lending an extra dimension to the music
The soft clinking of glasses, the occasional applause and the quiet murmurs become part of the listening experience, enhancing the album’s authenticity and charm
RECORDING LIVE on June 25 1961 at The Village Vanguard New York City
