"Bitches Brew" shook conventions, changed the history of music and is still ahead of its time forty years after its creation
"Listen to This" was the working title of the album, and this invitation and request is still the best way to encounter the work: with open ears
Miles Davis assembled "the best rock & roll band ever heard" for the 1970 recording, with musicians including Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Airto, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, Don Alias, Bennie Maupin, Larry Young and Lenny White
For the recording, Davis arranged the participants in a semicircle around him, conducting their tempo, solos and cues with vague hints
The decision to have two, sometimes even three, drummers and two bassists puts rhythm at the center of the music
A veritable galaxy of melodies sprang from the collective improvisations and interplay, which were later pieced together by producer Ted Macero
